An Introduction to Making Books

with Terrence Tougas from the Brookfield Craft Center

Making handmade books is an ancient art dating back to at least the Egyptians making papyrus scrolls. Since then, countless variations in structures, process and materials have been introduced. It remains an art form with infinite possibilities, but also one accessible to the individual. It requires only a modest number of simple tools, materials, and a little imagination.

This course is an introduction to the art of handmade books. Students will construct two different book structures and through these hands-on exercises acquire basic book making skills. We will also spend some time reviewing and discussing common book structures.
